Newt Gingrich’s Credentials

Any candidate wishing to run for president needs to have a strong track record and solid credentials. We’ve put together this article to show you how Newt Gingrich stacks-up as a viable presidential candidate.

Years In Service
One of the first things that pops-out-at-you when you look at Newt’s resume is that “Newt Gingrich has seen a lot of politics.” His first year in office as a US Representative was in 1978 – that was during the Carter Administration! Also, after that first election that he won back in ’78 Newt Gingrich was re-elected ten times. That means that he also knows a thing or two about running successful campaigns.

House Minority Whip
During Newt Gingrich’s time as a member of the United States House of Representatives, he was elected by his congressional peers as House Minority Whip. The position opened up when Dick Cheney stepped down after being appointed to Secretary of Defense under George H. Bush in 1989.

Speaker of the House
In 1995 Newt Gingrich was elected as the 58th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and ended up serving in that position for four years. As Speaker of the House, Newt organized a massive Republican turnaround to gain republican majorities of the House and Senate. This ended a 46-year republican majority drought, and this Republican majority of the House continued for six straight congressional cycles (12 years).

Budget Balancer
Amid government shutdown threats during the Clinton Administration, Newt Gingrich’s term as Speaker saw the first balanced budget of the US Government in 27 years.

Time Magazine – Man of the Year
The editors of Time magazine chose Newt Gingrich as their “Person of the Year” in 1995. The Time editors attributed the widespread Republican successes in the 1994 midterm elections to Newt’s leadership.
